VOORBURGSE RONDGANG Saturday 6th October 2018

October 2018

Voorburgse Rondgang

Exposition of Barbara Gelcich!

August 2014

conclave

In the months of September and october there is an exposition of both recent and past works in the Paleis van Justitie in The Hague. The location is at Prins Clauslaan 60, 2595 AJ, Den Haag. Visitors are very welcome every working day from 8.30 to 17.00. When you arrive you need to announce yourself by the visitors counter with an identity document and you need to go through the detections gate.
The exposition is at the second floor in a beautiful and large room, where the paintings are wonderfully presented. A combination of both my familiar style as well as the new ways that I explore - color, strength and movement remain the undisputed characteristics in all my themes.

Minibieb

In the last period I never stopped painting. I was busy in finishing painting Betise. This winner of the ‘Batailles des Reine’ in Valtournenche now is happily hanging on the wall of the house of its new owner. In the meantime, with great pleasure, I also spent time decorating little furnitures and utensils, for that purpose flowers are a very good subject. The reason why I started this kind of decoration was the commission of my first Minibieb in The Hague. The Minibieb is a public box where residents can leave and/or take books for free, books are in this way exchanged among the residents. The Minibieb is now in Van Heutszstraat 12 and people love it!

Summer in Valle d'Aosta

Barbara Gelcich in Valle d'Aosta

It's already summer!
Every year, during the summer break, I go to rest in Valle d'Aosta, Italy. For some years I've been going there also for another reason, to attend the “Batailles des Reines”.
These “Battles” (sounds more aggressive than it is in reality) in Valle d'Aosta are even more important than a soccer match. In these events the cows compete against each other by pushing each other with the horns, the first cow to go away loses. The last cow (the one that wins the final round) becomes the new ‘Queen’.
No cow gets hurt and actually they are treated like movie stars by their owner, some of them sees their cow like their own child. There is an incredible passion and love in these events, it is amazing! it's wonderful to attend this competition.
Because of the majestity and strenght of the cow I started to paint this beautiful animals. For years I've been going to this competitions to expose and sell my paintings. Sometimes the owners come to me asking if I can portrait their cows.
If you are in the neighbourhoods you surely have to come and see the Batailles des Reines!.

Puur Nature

Florencia Foresi explains the Artistic Heredity of Barbara Gelcich

Barbara Gelcich was born in Genova in 1963. She learned some artistic skills from her father Guido Gelcich (pupil of Oskar Kokoschka) who always encouraged her to take the brush and paint. In 1993, she moved to The Hague, where she is still living.

How do you define your style?
My style is mostly Figurative, it means you can recognize a person, animal, object… but it is not always possible to define it as figurative. The kind of expression changes, it depends on the moment I paint it and the object. The important points for me are “the colors, the movement, and the force” in my work of art.

What is your technique?
I usually paint with oil paint as a base of my paintings and then I use pastel colours to create a velvety texture, it gives a warm atmosphere. When I go to the paint store to buy oil paint and pastels to use together, they look at me puzzled.

Do you feel changes in your paintings according to your life experience, age, life stage…?
Yes, for example when I was depressed, I felt bad and I didn’t paint anything – but the doctor told me “you must paint” so finally I started to paint and it helped me to get out of the depression. Painting was like a medicine for me. Now when I paint it might be possible to see my mood in the colours, but that is not always the case. Mostly when I feel down I don’t feel much like painting, and when I’m happy I paint more. These last years I feel good, so I paint quite a lot.

What is your creative process when painting?
Barbara explains that she works on different topics at the same time. “I take a lot of pictures of what I like and of what I would like to paint”. Sometimes she only sees something and feels like painting it. “Sometimes I use a little piece of the picture” to build up the painting or “I make it less detailed than the original”.

How and why do you choose the topics for your paintings?
I started to paint landscapes and then people and cows.” Afterwards she also painted flowers and other topics (horses, musicians…). The choice to paint a certain topic comes spontaneously, when she sees something that strikes her, her mind starts by itself to see the painting on the canvas. But the largest artistic work consists in the fighting cows (Batailles des Reines). “I like to paint the cows because you can see clearly the cows’ force when they are fighting, especially because their strong muscles are clearly visible at that moment.

I recommend to all readers to go to Bodega the Posthoorn where the last exhibition (for now) of Barbara Gelcich is in until 2 February, and also visit her atelier at Kunstpost Mariahoeve, Tarwekamp 3. Her next exhibition: Justice Palace for next year.
